NEW DELHI: A day before the robbery in Mayur Vihar Phase III, the victim, jeweller Ajay Gupta, had stowed over 50kg of silver ornaments inside a drawer built into the divan. The robbers knew that beforehand and were searching for the closet's keys before murdering Gupta's 38-year-old wife Madhu at their ground floor flat on Thursday afternoon, sources said after speaking to their children, Himanshu and Himanshi, witnesses to the heist.

Gupta told police the robbers made off with Rs 10 lakh in cash and ornaments. The gang of youths posed as couriers to gain entry into the house, where they held the children hostage and killed their mother when tried to raise the alarm.
Police said the number of robbers is still to be ascertained. "Himashu told us about four well-dressed youths inside the room. We cannot confirm whether or not they had aides waiting outside the house," said a cop. Police sources said Himanshi was traumatized and unable to give a detailed account of the incident. "She is suffering from typhoid and the incident has sent her into shock," said a neighbour. For now, police are going by Himanshu's statement. The boy said the robbers made a dash for the divan the moment they entered and demanded Madhu give them the keys.
